Seeing My Sinfulness: The Response of Isaiah
How do we see our sin in light of the holiness of God?
When Isaiah was given a vision of the Lord in Isaiah 6, his first response was not to compare himself with the people around him. Confronted with the absolute holiness of God, Isaiah suddenly saw himself as he truly was: “Woe is me! For I am lost.”
In Lesson 2 of Foundations of the Gospel, we consider what Isaiah’s response teaches us about our own sinfulness—and why understanding the holiness of God changes the way we see ourselves.
In This Lesson
In Isaiah 6, the prophet is given a vision of the Lord “high and lifted up.” As the seraphim proclaim, “Holy, holy, holy is the LORD of hosts,” Isaiah becomes profoundly aware of his own sinfulness.
In this lesson, we consider:
Why God’s holiness reveals the seriousness of our sin
Why comparing ourselves with other people gives us a false measure of goodness
What Isaiah meant when he cried, “Woe is me! For I am lost”
Why recognizing our sinfulness is necessary to understand our need for a Savior
Key Scripture: Isaiah 6:1–5 (ESV)
