The Holiness of God | Foundations of the Gospel – Lesson 1
The gospel begins with God.
When people think about the gospel, they often begin with mankind's sin or the cross of Christ. While those truths are essential, Scripture begins somewhere even more fundamental—it begins with God Himself.
Before we can understand why we need a Savior, we must first understand the character of the God before whom we stand.
In Isaiah 6, the prophet Isaiah was given a vision unlike any other in Scripture. He saw the Lord seated upon His throne, surrounded by heavenly beings who continually proclaimed:
"Holy, holy, holy is the LORD of hosts; the whole earth is full of his glory!"
(Isaiah 6:3, ESV)
This vision reveals that God's holiness is not simply one of His attributes—it defines His perfect character. His holiness sets Him apart from all creation and establishes the standard by which everything else is measured.
Only when we see God as He truly is do we begin to see ourselves as we truly are.
